give you @ next time you join.. even when I'm not here :)
obany: it's for the bot.. to get @ and such
WB5KAN: ok, I'll do it now
*** brentnev left the channel
*** Spotk2 joins the channel

Jurian: ron: /msg unclean pass
Jurian: dont forget the /msg part :)

obany: Ron, a question i don't have the equiptment but

WB5KAN: hey Clipper
KL0WT: Morning
WB5KAN: you guys carry on a couple minutes while I do
something.
Jurian: soon as I get the money and the time, I'll see
about getting a HAM license.. :)
*** TinMan joins the channel
KL0TW: Oooops
Jurian: hehe :)
Jurian: only callsign I have is 19IC103 .. but that's CB
radio :)
obany: it all depends if there are places in the
Netherlands where to learn it. probably there are
obany: :)
KL0TW: Mine used to be KLF5817 :-) About a hundred years
ago
Jurian: there are places here yeah
Jurian: :)
Jurian: 19th division = netherlands
TinMan: My current call signs are Hay You
KL0TW: Hehehe
Jurian: :)
WB5KAN: Who is TinMan?
KL0TW: MikeL
WB5KAN: Hey Mike
Jurian: btw ron, do you want all the members to be able to
get @ here? or just a few?
Jurian: there's no problem in giving everyone @ :)
*** gam-bit joins the channel
WB5KAN: everyone is just fine
Jurian: ok :)
WB5KAN: who is gam-bit?
KL0TW: The skip is rolling in on my CB base.
obany: nolog: i am not on tt-radio am i allowed to chat
here ? :)
WB5KAN: Jon = compose12 ?
WB5KAN: Ok
WB5KAN: hey jon
KL0TW: Antenna still up WB?
gam-bit: hullo WB5KAN
WB5KAN: WB5KAN = Ron
gam-bit: I guessed.
TinMan: Ok, stupid question what does "WB" stand
for?
Jurian: Welcome Back
Jurian: normally
Jurian: in this case, WB is part of Ron's callsign :)
KL0TW: The location you live in when you get your license
KL0TW: Thats how they can tell where you are from
KL0TW: Mine is KL ...... Alaska
WB5KAN: Actually, it's the 5 in my call sign that tells
what reagon I am in.
KL0TW: Kilo Lima zero Tango Whiskey
WB5KAN: The WB means I've had a liscense a long time
KL0TW: Hehehe
Jurian: :)
gam-bit: No then it would be OF5KAN... Old Fart ....
KL0TW: Okay, what do all the letters mean?
TinMan: so you were using WB for short to mean wb5kan
WB5KAN: Ok, folks it's time to start.
KL0TW: Yes TinMan, sorry
TinMan: thanks
WB5KAN: What I have in mind is a discussion of what each
of the tt-radio members want to get out of tt-radio activities.
KL0TW: Okay
obany: well then i won't have much to say... i am not a
tt-radio member, but can i join the list?
WB5KAN: In addition, non-tt radio members are requested to
just watch. To participate please join the group.
KL0TW: I think where I live will become a "hub",
or a base such as yours
obany: okay i will join the group then ... just in case
WB5KAN: obany, good!
WB5KAN: obany, then feel free to participate today.
WB5KAN: What I see the IRC chat being is a training ground
for formal net procedures before folks can get equipment.
KL0TW: Our place will probably become a realy station of
sorts.
WB5KAN: I see us starting the session just like a formal
net would and conducting it as such.
KL0TW: realy = relay
WB5KAN: after the formal net is over, the chat will be
turned over to normal chatting.
KL0TW: Agreed
WB5KAN: that's the way I would like to see it in a short
time.
obany: ok
WB5KAN: However, until we can each get some texts we are
in sort of a waiting mode.
WB5KAN: k
WB5KAN: k = over to the next one who wants to talk
WB5KAN: Questions?
KL0TW: Understood K
gam-bit: I will be dropping all the list for a short time
while I move. So I may pick up the list after my return from the
dark side of the moon. I will be quite today and just listen. K
WB5KAN: gam-bit, ok ...k
WB5KAN: so, I see that we have already learned some radio
procedure. k
KL0TW: Ron, give us an actual transmision with call sign
at the start. Something short (to type) K
TinMan: Is "K" used as over for voice or CW
WB5KAN: k is used as over for CW ... on voice just say
"over".
TinMan: thanks
WB5KAN: When using VOX, like in a quick conversation mode,
saying "over" isn't necessary except on formal nets.
KL0TW: VOX? K
WB5KAN: The various digital modes have different ways of
transferring control to another station.
WB5KAN: VOX = Voice Actuated Transmit
KL0TW: Got it K
KL0TW: You forgot the K .... K
WB5KAN: Now, Clipper, what did you ask me to do.
WB5KAN: k
KL0TW: Carry on K
WB5KAN: I think you asked for a simple demo of a
transmission. ...
KL0TW: Yes K
WB5KAN: CQ CQ CQ DE WB5KAN WB5KAN WB5KAN K
WB5KAN: What this means is "calling anyone" from
WB5KAN. k
WB5KAN: Question?
KL0TW: Would it be nesecarry to say it three times? K
TinMan: This is for CW only? k
Jurian: what's the DE mean? something like DX on CB radio?
is it the used mode or something? k
WB5KAN: On CW, the practice is 3 times because conditions
may be poor and so you repeat many things so the other end has a
second chance.
WB5KAN: DE means "from" k
obany: okay WB5KAN
Jurian: ok I understand. K
KL0TW: Say you were calling me. K
WB5KAN: During a CW conversation the conditions dictate
how often to repeat. Under good conditions you repeat only when
requested.
WB5KAN: k
WB5KAN: If I were calling clipper I would say:
WB5KAN: KL0TW KL0TW KL0TW DE WB5KAN K
WB5KAN: correction, I would end with KN
obany: ok. k
KL0TW: Thats what I thought, but wasn't sure. What is KN?
K
WB5KAN: KN = only the called station should respond. k
WB5KAN: ?? k
KL0TW: Was taking notes K
TinMan: I noted you only typede your call sign once is
that because of good conditions?
WB5KAN: If I didn't get a response, or received a QRZ?
(QRZ? = who is calling me?) I would repeat my call 3 times. k
WB5KAN: more ...
*** Jan joins the channel
WB5KAN: On CW, there are many "Q" signals that
mean specific things ...
Jan: Hi - Sorry I'm late
Jurian: Is there a list of those "Q" signals on
the web somewhere? or are you going to explain some of them here?
K
WB5KAN: QRZ? = Who is calling me? QRZ without the ? means
I am calling you. All "Q" signals work this way.
WB5KAN: In addition, there are an additional set of
"QN" signals that are specific to formal CW net
operations and make things go very fast. In addition, on CW, very
many things are abbreviated ... for instance "please"
is transmitted as "pse". k
TinMan: can you give an example of QRZ in it's use
WB5KAN: Ok, suppose I have been calling CQ for a while
with no response and give up. All of a sudden I hear a weal
signal with my call sign. I would transmit:
WB5KAN: QRZ? QRZ? QRZ? WB5KAN WB5KAN WB5KAN KN
WB5KAN: k
TinMan: now how about without the "?"
Jurian: Do you know of a webpage that has all those Q
signal's on it? like.. QRZ, QSL, QRA, QRM, QRN, QSB, QTH, QSO and
their meanings? K
WB5KAN: When the station who is calling me receives (ham
talk = copies) my QRZ? , he would transmit:
WB5KAN: WB5KAN WB5KAN QRZ DE KL0TW KL0TW KN
WB5KAN: k
WB5KAN: No, Jurian, I don't; but I can provide such a page
on the web site reserved for this class.
WB5KAN: k
Jurian: I think that would be appreciated Ron. K
obany: yes. k
Jan: Ron, that would be great!
WB5KAN: Ok, it's on my "to-do list".
WB5KAN: ?? k
Jan: Could you even include the log of this session, so
that late-comers may read up on what they missed :-)
KL0TW: I can't think of any questions K
WB5KAN: Jan, I sure will ... if loging was automatically
turned on when I started this software.
WB5KAN: k
Jurian: LogBot is logging the entire session in HTML
format, so it'll be easy to put it on the web.. just tell me
where to email it so someone with access to www.zetatalk.com can
upload it.. :)
Jurian: K
*** riskrrave joins the channel
gam-bit: here's a neat site. http://www.qrz.com/ k
WB5KAN: Great! Just email it to me. I have access to
www.zetatalk.com/radio/ ... that's where the classes will live.
WB5KAN: k
obany: k
Jurian: will do, could you give me your email address
then? :) K
WB5KAN: Sure ... Ronnie_L_Darby@hotmail.com k
Jurian: tnx K
KL0TW: Who all has a license here besides Ron and I? K
WB5KAN: Everyone, carry on for a few minutes ... gotta
make a trip to the rest room.
KL0TW: K
KL0TW: I have a no code tech license.
KL0TW: K
Jan: If KLOTW is in Alaska, I think the two of you are the
only ones so far. I will hopefully attend a course starting in
January, for a technical license in April
KL0TW: That I hope to upgrade soon.
TinMan: I have passed the novice writen test only.
Jan: (They did not get enough students in December, so
they postponed, hoping that more students would turn up)
gam-bit: none here yet. But that QRZ site looks pretty
cool it has programs to download I can test with. K
KL0TW: Yes. You can take the practice tests online (US)
KL0TW: I will find the address and email the list with it.
KL0TW: It was very helpful
Jurian: I'll be back in about 15 minutes.. K
TinMan: I think we need to paractice what we just learned
KL0TW: Yes K
TinMan: CQ CQ CQ DE TINMAN TINMAN TINMAN K
KL0TW: I can see I am not going to be very good at this
without hearing it. K
*** LPM joins the channel
TinMan: KLOTW KLOTW KLOTW DE TINMAN KN
KL0TW: KL0TW KL0TW QRZ DE TINMAN TIMNAN KN
TinMan: NOW WHAT?
KL0TW: GOOD MORNING TINMAN KN
KL0TW: Hehehehe ....... don't know
KL0TW: K
TinMan: O- OK DOING FINE HOWS THE RIG?
KL0TW: THE RIG IS FINE. THINGS ARE GOING SLOW K
KL0TW: I have no idea how to quit K
TinMan: I KEEP FORGETING THE k K K
WB5KAN: I'm back and "reading the mail" - ham
talk for just listening to you guys. k
TinMan: YES, I KNOW - DON'T TINKW WE GOT THAT LESSION YET
K
KL0TW: NOT YET K
WB5KAN: You are all doing very well! ... You asked the
question of how to stop. k
KL0TW: WB5KAN PLS TEACH K
WB5KAN: When you are ready to end a conversation you just
say so and then transmit:
WB5KAN: 73
WB5KAN: 73 = BEST REGARDS
KL0TW: Thats it? No call sign? K
WB5KAN: KLOTW DE WB5KAN SK
WB5KAN: that's it. k
WB5KAN: You can also indicate you are turning your radio
off by ending with AR k
obany: k
TinMan: Please, explane a bit more on sk and what you did?
WB5KAN: SK indicates that I am completed with this
conversation or contact and will not respond again. k
WB5KAN: AR indicates the same but also indicates that you
will not be listening any longer because you are turning your
radio off.
WB5KAN: k
KL0TW: So, in short SK would meen "Stopping
over"? K
WB5KAN: that's correct k
WB5KAN: more
WB5KAN: This all may sound complecated somewhat, but after
using it for a very short time it becomes second nature and you
understand without even thinking about it. k
WB5KAN: more
WB5KAN: When you do get equipment, the best way to learn
common operating practice is to just listen to other's
conversations. k
KL0TW: That si what I am hoping for K
WB5KAN: si ?? k
TinMan: So to review 73 AR SK are ways to end off, did I
miss any?
KL0TW: si = is K
WB5KAN: tinman, yes ... you didn't miss anything.
WB5KAN: k
WB5KAN: moe
WB5KAN: more
WB5KAN: To end a conversation with you would go something
like the following:
WB5KAN: tinman de wb4kan == really enjoyed the QSO (QSO =
contact or conversation) == hope to see you soon. 73 to you and
yours == tinman de wb5kan sk ar
WB5KAN: k
TinMan: I see the wisdom in this way of commication it
tells who is talking with who in case some others are lissing.
KL0TW: So de would be like "this is"? K
WB5KAN: klotw, yes k
KL0TW: WB6KAN THANK YOU KL0TW K
KL0TW: WB6KAN = WB5KAN K
TinMan: what is the significance of the = =?
KL0TW: Just a question mark I was using. K
WB5KAN: tinman, the use of identification in this way is
no longer required by fcc regulations but is still mostly used
except in very fast contacts. Several years ago it was required
by the fcc regulations. k
KL0TW: Never mind K
obany: is this in all countries the same? k
WB5KAN: tinman, the == (double equal sign is a way of
pausing and also seperating thoughts) the sound is very easy to
interpret and so becomes second nature. k
WB5KAN: obany, yes because the history of CW is the old
Morse Code, which was established as an international standard
for ships at sea. k
obany: okay. k
KL0TW: This was a good class today K
TinMan: Thanks, k
WB5KAN: Ok, I see we've been at it for an hour. So anyone
who has "checked in" (ham talk for joining a net) is
free to go. All who wish feel free to carry on with normal chat.
de WB5KAN SK
KL0TW: Cool
KL0TW: I think this is going to go over bery well
KL0TW: bery =very
Jan: I got in late and missed the fundamentals at the
beginning. Sorry for that. Ron, do you have any books to
recommend for starting a self-study? (Hopefully I can get them
here, if I have to order from amazon.com it takes a couple of
weeks before I get them...)
Jan: Also, should I buy a radio now or must I wait until I
have a license? If I can buy now, any recommendations?
WB5KAN: Jan, I will be recomending a book on general
operating practice within the next week and posting on the list.
KL0TW: So, just to get this straight, anyone can join the
list for tt-radio?
Jan: Thanks k
WB5KAN: Jan, you can purchase equipment now if you wish;
but I think that during the class you will get a better feel for
what is important and what is just a bell or whistle.
WB5KAN: Clipper, anyone who wishes to learn about using
radio to eventually replace the internet as a means of
communications after the PS is welcome to join the tt-radio. They
just must understand that this is a training activity and
therefore are expected to participate to the extent that they are
able.
Jan: When I buy, should I start out directly with that
huge, expensive radio I will need for our future communication,
or should I start out with a beginner's "toy"?
KL0TW: Understood Ron. Many will ask me.
JurAway: what was 55 again? K
WB5KAN: Jan, I would recomend starting with a used radio
for a fraction of a new radio price. Then, after you have some
experience operating buy that $3000 new rig.
*** gam-bit left the channel
Jan: I'll see what I can get. Thnx k
WB5KAN: Clipper, what was the question you just referred
to?
KL0TW: Well folks. The sun is shining and I want to see
some of it before it disapeers in two hours.
TinMan: How old would you look for?
KL0TW: Who could join the tt-radio list
WB5KAN: Juran, we have closed the formal portion of the
class and everyone is now free to leave as they wish. We are now
just chatting informally.
Jurian: ok :)
obany: ok
WB5KAN: tinman, I would look for 10 or 15 years old ...
can get a good price.
KL0TW: That would almost be a tube type wouldn't it?
LPM: used equipment?
TinMan: How can one tell if it is still in good shape?
TinMan: tube type was older than this.
WB5KAN: I would require that the radio be demonstrated and
have a radio club member with me to advise.
TinMan: Is there any easy way to check for splatter?
WB5KAN: Yes, tubes would be 20 years ago ... although if I
could find a Drake TR4C in good shape I would pay a good price
for it because it was a great rig.
KL0TW: I was thinking, join the radio club and buy from
the members.
WB5KAN: Good thinking Clipper ... as far as splatter goes,
have someone listening on another radio and see how it sounds.
KL0TW: What is splatter?
WB5KAN: I need to go folks. Other work to finish. So 73
and see you latter. de WB5KAN AR
